Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. Numerous day walks within the park
are available, ranging from 10 minutes to a full day. The Department of
Conservation produces detailed brochures on park walks. The most popular full
day walk is the Tongariro Crossing (17km). Total area - 78,761 ha. Tongariro
was New Zealand's first national park and the second to be created in the world.
The volcanic centre of the North Island was given to the Crown by Horonuku Te
Heuheu Tukino IV in 1887 and gazetted as a national park in 1894. In 1993
Tongariro became the first property to be inscribed on the World Heritage List
under the revised cultural criteria describing cultural landscapes. The
mountains at the heart of the park have cultural and religious significance for
the Maori people and symbolize the spiritual links between this community and
its environment. The park contains active and extinct volcanoes, a diverse range
of ecosystems and highly scenic landscapes. Whakapapa Visitor Centre is open
daily: 8am-5pm (winter), 8am-6pm (summer). Hiking track information is regularly
